The Main House of the Inn dates back to 1798. According to research
by Trevor Maxwell, a reporter of the Cape Cod Times, it might have served as a hiding place for slaves traveling
along the "Underground Railroad." In his article "Ties to Freedom," Trevor described the small stone cellar
found under a trap door in the Inn's entrance foyer.
The Inn has its own dock and sandy/pebbly beach to enjoy swimming, kayaking, fishing and sailing
(moorings are available). Early risers can watch the magnificent sunrise; an added bonus
can be watching the moon rise over the bay, which is almost as spectacular. If you plan to visit
in early fall, you can witness the harvest on the cranberry bog right next door to the Inn.

Other activities in the surrounding area:
From the Inn you have easy access to several of the beaches on the Atlantic and Cape Cod bay;
amongst them Nauset, Skaket and Coast Guard (beach chairs and towels available if needed). A short
boat trip from Chatham takes you to the highly acclaimed, pristine South Beach and Monomoy Island
where you can fish, swim, observe the shore birds and the Grey and Harbor Seals in their
natural habitat. There are several cruises leaving from Barnstable or P'Town which will take you
out in search of the Humpback, Finback, Minke and Pilot whales.
We are also fortunate to be close to several challenging private and public golf courses.
If you like to walk, there are many trails both inland and on the water front. The Cape is also
proud of its many bike trails.
There are numerous shops, art galleries, live theatre and restaurants in the villages of
Orleans, Chatham, Brewster, and Dennis only minutes away.
